  • A Colorado West Nile death has been traced to a transfusion of blood that was screened for the virus, federal health officials reported Thursday.
  • Representatives from Cheyenne, Kit Carson, Logan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington and Weld counties participated in a conference call Monday afternoon, but most said they would not OK a ballot question until county attorneys delivered final wording. Participants agreed, however, that such a wording should be uniform.  Weld County has been spearheading the 51st state initiative, which supports secession from Colorado.  A final draft of the wording will be presented in an Aug. 12 conference call and is expected to trigger a final decision, Conway said.
  • Come Wednesday, 16- and 17-year-old Coloradans can pre-register to vote in future elections, under a new state law sponsored by Longmont Democratic Rep. Jonathan Singer.
  • A dozen rescuers armed with chain saws and other tools chipped away at tons of ice and snow Sunday to the recover the body of a 25-year-old snowboarder killed when an ice tunnel collapsed on Oregon's Mount Hood.  The snowboarder, Collin Backowski, of Colorado, was traveling with five companions when the collapse hit Saturday afternoon. The others tried to dig him out but could not break through the ice and snow, which an official described as being as thick as concrete.
  • Western elected officials, including Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler, told a presidential commission Thursday that the U.S. Postal Service and a lack of voter education are among some of the voting system's biggest weaknesses.
  • Hypothermia stopped a bid by a 73-year-old Fort Collins resident to be the oldest man to ever swim the English Channel Thursday.  George Thornton quit after nine hours in the frigid water. It takes roughly 16 hours to make it across the channel.
  • Larry Eustachy has agreed to a new contract that will keep him at Colorado State through the 2017-18 season and that has options for three additional seasons.
  • Palmer Lake Town Council voted Thursday to ban the recreational sale of marijuana in Palmer Lake. The Council decided to opt out with a 4-2 vote.  The two members who voted against the ban wanted to pose a temporary moratorium instead. Citizens weighed in at a town hall meeting Thursday.
  • It’s been several days since a tanker rolled over on Loveland Pass and spilled thousands of gallons of gas and it still may be weeks before the environmentally hazardous situation is cleaned up.  The Snake River is nearby and Denver gets some of its water supply from that area.
