  • A powerful thunderstorm brought heavy rain and hail to areas across the Front Range.
    The storm is also responsible for a mudslide in Larimer County.  The Colorado Department of Transportation has closed both directions of Highway 14 west of Ted's Place from mm 119 to mm 110 due to a mudslide. People in Larimer County reported hail ranging from the size of a pea to the size of a half dollar Friday night.  There are reports of accidents, localized street flooding, downed utility lines and broken trees across the Fort Collins area.(AP)
    • A father has been formally charged after his toddler fell from a moving vehicle.  Ross McCoy has been charged with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, child abuse without injury, leaving the scene of an accident, aggravated driving after revocation and violation of a protection order.(KCNC)


  • Longtime Denver radio voice Rick Barber. Rick Barber, for 30 years a fixture on the overnight KOA airwaves, keeping company with insomniacs in Colorado and surrounding states, died Friday morning following complications as a result of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.(DP)
  • The Denver District Court has sentenced a man who shot at police and barricaded himself in a building to serve 28 years in prison.  A press release by the District Attorney's Office Friday said the prosecution had asked for Ryon Olthoff to receive the maximum sentence of 32 years for first-degree assault on a peace officer.  The 36-year-old was taken into custody by a Denver Police Department SWAT team after a seven-hour standoff on Sept. 12, 2012.(DP)
  • Revenue from sales-and-use-tax collections from the first four months of 2013 in Denver is up about $7 million, or 5.5 percent, compared with the same period last year, according to data from the city's finance department.(DBJ)
  • Finally after three days without being able to shower, flush the toilet and use the tap, dozens of people at the Aspen Park apartment complex finally got their water back while management has yet to explain delays in repairing a broken water line. (KUSA)
  • The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has suspended all blood-alcohol and blood-drug testing at the state toxicology lab until further notice.  The suspension comes one month after Colorado defense attorneys exposed a report by the health and environment department they say revealed potentially biased lab results.(AP)
  • Colorado personal income declined 1.5 percent in the first quarter of 2013 after growing 3.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to a report released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.(DP)
  • The federal Bureau of Land Management has approved a plan to explore for coal in western Colorado in an area that’s rich with wildlife, according to environmental groups.(DBJ)

  • DNA evidence linked to at least 456 cases were mistakenly destroyed by the Aurora Police Department, according to a news release. This comes after APD Chief Daniel Oates announced Tuesday that DNA evidence in at least 48 sexual assault cases were destroyed in error this past January.  The 456 cases include alleged felonies and misdemeanors. More than 360 of those cases are Arapahoe County investigations, 93 involve investigations in Adams County, and an investigation in Douglas County.  The additional cases came to light after a comprehensive audit in anticipation of the first meeting of the DNA Review Panel, the APD release said.(GC)
  • Larimer County officials are preparing to sue a Fort Collins company for failing to make good on a $250,000 settlement over a failed software project.County commissioners have authorized the start of legal action against Colorado Customware Inc., or CCI, because the company has stopped making payments to the Larimer County Treasurer’s Office as stipulated in an agreement reached last year.(Coloradoan)
  • Sheriff’s officials say two women found dead in Peyton were the wife and mother of a driver who fatally shot himself after leading authorities on a chase.El Paso County sheriff’s officials said Thursday that deputies went to a home in Peyton on Monday after learning 53-year-old James Buchanan had told a relative that he had killed his wife, Annetta Buchanan, and his mother, Grace Buchanan.(KCNC)
  • Former KHOW radio show host Peter Boyles - who was fired from his station following a "heated physical exchange" with his producer - has been hired as the new morning host on KNUS starting on Monday.(KNUS)
  • Denver Public Schools said they’re ahead of the curve when it comes to offering healthy snacks in schools. New federal rules mandate that unhealthy snacks like candy bars, soda and potato chips be replaced with healthier options.  It’s the first nutritional overhaul of school snacks in 30 years.(KCNC)
  • Colorado Lt. Gov. Joseph A. Garcia issued an executive order on Wednesday June 26 declaring a disaster emergency due to the West Fork Fire in Mineral, Rio Grande and Hinsdale counties.He also ordered that $12.5 million be allocated to battle the 83,004-acre blaze. He mandated the transfer of the funds from the state’s General Fund. The complex combining three area fires met the criteria for coverage under the state’s Emergency Fire Fund. “However, EFF funds were exhausted from previous fires,” the order said.  The order makes $3 million available immediately for emergency response and an additional $9.5 million accessible after July 1. The state is eligible for federal reimbursement, and will apply.(GC)
  •  A brother and sister have been charged in a series of burglaries.  Charles Darrow and Valorie Darrow have been charged with multiple counts of second-degree burglary and multiple counts of Pawnbroker’s Act Violations.  The charges allege that from May 31 to June 20 of this year the Darrows broke into storage sheds at homes and churches. The charges allege those stolen items were later pawned.(KUSA)
  • Just 10 minutes after Boulder police issued a news release Thursday morning announcing their hunt for a convicted killer wanted in connection with a scissor attack earlier this month, a tip to Longmont police led to the quick arrest of the suspect in that assault.(Daily Camera)
  • Early indications suggest Colorado’s most destructive wildfire wasn’t intentionally set.The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says neither a dog nor specialized equipment have been able to detect an obvious signs of accelerants in the wooded area where the Black Forest Fire started. In a statement Wednesday, however, the office says its use can’t be ruled out completely.(KCNC)

  • The Aurora Police Department's destruction of DNA evidence in 48 sexual assault cases could complicate efforts for both prosecutors and defense attorneys, but it won't stop investigators from pursing new leads, District Attorney George Brauchler said Wednesday. (AP)
  • The big spring snow in the mountains and a sharp drop in water use by metro Denver residents has driven utility officials to loosen lawn-watering rules. Denver water commissioners on Wednesday decided to let customers water their lawns and gardens three days a week, instead of two. Denver Water's mountain reservoirs are 92 percent full, and since restrictions took effect April 1, the utility's 1.3 million customers have used 3.4 billion gallons less than average. (Denver Post)
  • Authorities say they have collected several items that could be clues in the search for Dylan Redwine, a teen who has been missing since last November. According to the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, several days of searches were conducted in the area of Middle Mountain. A variety of items were collected during five days of searching along 12 miles of U.S. Forest Service Middle Mountain Road,” sheriff’s office spokesman Dan Bender said in a statement. Bender said the found items will have to be sent to a laboratory to see if they are connected to the investigation.(AP)
  • The judge in the Aurora theater shooting case is prepared to summon the largest jury pool ever called in Colorado if the case goes to trial. The 5,000 summonses that Judge Carlos Samour said this week he intends to send out to prospective jurors would dwarf other jury pools summoned in Colorado and would be at least among the largest called in U.S. history, according to a national expert on jury selection. People on the jury rolls in Arapahoe County, where the trial is scheduled to start in February, would have a roughly 1-in-90 chance of being summoned for the trial.(GC)
    • A Longmont homeowner was shot in the leg during a confrontation with a man he told police he found burglarizing his home on the 4600 block of Portofino Drive on Wednesday morning. (Daily Camera)
  • Gilpin County authorities responded Wednesday to a wildfire burning about five miles northwest of Central City The fire is on Dakota Mountain, about four miles west of mile marker 10.(DP)
  • One person was found dead inside a burning apartment in Aurora early Thursday morning but investigators say the victim did not die in the fire. The fire broke out around 2:20 a.m. at 1434 East Kentucky Place, Aurora Fire Department said. That's just a few blocks northeast of Interstate 225 and East Mississippi Avenue. The Aurora Police Department mobile crime lab was at the home at about 3:45 a.m.(KMGH)
  • Colorado gay-rights advocates reacted with joy and anticipation over two U.S. Supreme Court decisions Wednesday that sided with gay-marriage and against the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DP)

  • A Highlands Ranch man was found guilty Monday of unlawful sexual contact with an 81-year-old woman in Jefferson County. A six-man, six woman jury found Michael Arreola, 59, guilty of two counts of attempted sexual assault of an at-risk adult, one count of unlawful sexual contact with an at-risk adult, one count of attempted sexual contact with an at-risk adult and menacing.(DP)
  • Denver police arrested a brother and sister on June 20 for burglarizing more than 20 sheds and out-buildings, according to a news release from the Denver Police Department.  Detectives recovered thousands of dollars worth of stolen lawn equipment and have identified the suspects as Charles Darrow, 45, and Valerie Darrow, 46.(DP)
  • Evidence in 48 sexual assault cases was improperly destroyed by Aurora police officers who failed to follow protocols, and officials are continuing to investigate whether any additional cases have been affected by what Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates called "a grievous mistake. (DP)
  • Aurora theater shooting suspect James Holmes remains on-track for a February trial date, despite a judge's ruling Tuesday delaying a key deadline. (AP)
  • A section of Highway 128 in Jefferson County had to be closed Tuesday afternoon after a deadly accident. Investigators say distracted driving may be to blame. They said a 19-year-old crossed into the northbound lanes, hit a pickup and died. The driver of the pickup was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The names of those involved haven’t been released.(KCNC)
  • There’s now a proposal to get Colorado more wildfire fighting resources.  This Friday Gov. John Hickenlooper will meet with the 18 governors who belong to the Western Governors’ Association in Utah.  Hickenlooper says he plans to talk about a regional fire resource system to help all manage wildfires better with access to equipment. (KCNC)
  • A recall effort targeting Sen. Angela Giron (D-Pueblo) moved forward Monday when enough gathered petition signatures were verified by the Colorado secretary of state's office.  The Denver Post reported that the secretary of state's office verified 12,648 signatures from the more than gathered 13,400 that the group behind the recall effort, Pueblo Freedom and Rights, turned in earlier in June. The group only needed approximately 11,300 signatures.(Huff Post)
  • The five-and-a-half month search for a man accused of defrauding the life savings of a 71-year-old woman came to an end in Berkeley, California. Police there arrested Chris Rodriguez on a felony arrest warrant out of Aurora. He is being held there pending extradition to Colorado.  Police believe Rodriguez stole $300,000 from his 71-year-old victim and ran up more than $60,000 in credit card debt on her accounts before fleeing in January.(AP)
  • The 9Wants to Know investigators have learned a Denver Police officer has been pulled off patrol duty and given a desk job after a woman claimed he used his department cell phone to send her sexual text messages.  The officer worked in police district one.  The woman who made the complaint contacted 9Wants to Know. She said the text messages made her feel uncomfortable and were unwanted.  The officer is being investigated by the department's internal affairs bureau. (KUSA)
  • A station planned for the I-225 light rail line will be moved to accommodate concerns about electromagnetic interference and vibration near research equipment on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (KMGH)
  • Denver area home prices rose 9.9 percent in April from a year earlier, the 16th straight month of year-over-year price gains, according to the latest S&P/Case-Shiller Home Prices Index, released Tuesday. (DBJ)
  • Red flag fire conditions in Larimer County have prompted county commissioners to vote on a county-wide open fire ban, but with the use and sale of fireworks in parts of the county still legal, some people are confused (KCNC)
  • A new report shows Denver’s ban on urban camping is making life harder on the homeless.

The study by a homeless advocacy group found the following:
- 66 percent of the homeless surveyed say the ban has forced them to sleep in more hidden and unsafe locations.
- 37-percent say they often choose not to cover themselves from the elements in fear of being arrested.
- 60 percent say they get less sleep because they are told by police to move. (KCNC)

  • Dry conditions and the threat of wildfires have some cities taking no chances with July 4th approaching.  So far, nine municipalities have already canceled fireworks shows for the 4th of July holiday. While more cancellations could follow other cities like Louisville, which did not have a show last year, are moving forward with plans for fireworks.(AP)
  • Dustin Pedroia drove in four runs and had three of Boston’s season-high 20 hits, and Ryan Dempster took advantage of an early cushion that kept getting bigger for the Red Sox in their 11-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. (AP)

  • Crews worked to gain control of a fire at a Boulder condo complex that broke out Monday afternoon on a deck and then spread. Firefighters were still putting out some hot spots Monday evening at the complex located in the 4100 block of 47th Street. Police said the building had to be evacuated and nobody was hurt. (KCNC)

  • Aurora theater shooting suspect James Holmes is expected back in court Tuesday as attorneys discuss how long his mandatory mental-health evaluation should last.(GC)

  • High winds kept firefighters in southwestern Colorado in a defensive posture Monday, but officials are optimistic that decreasing winds will aid efforts on Tuesday and Wednesday in their battle against the West Fork Complex fire. (Denver Post)

  • A man accused of trafficking in forced labor told jurors Monday that he made sure the foreign nurses he recruited and helped get visas knew how much they would make when they got to the United States (AP)

  • One of the three people injured in a shooting Saturday in east Denver has died, Denver police announced Monday evening. (KCNC)

  • University of Colorado Regent Joe Neguse, a Democrat who represents the 2nd Congressional District, is expected to formally announce his candidacy for Colorado secretary of state at a news conference Tuesday. (AP)

  • A teenage driver is facing charges in a deadly crash that killed a 3-month-old girl and her grandfather. (KUSA)

  • A 51-year-old Arvada man was sentenced to six years in federal prison after scamming multiple people who thought they were participating in a health study tracking weight-loss. (Denver Post)

  • There’s been an environmental milestone in Golden where MillerCoors has found a way to reuse all their trash. Over the past two years MillerCoors has been stepping up recycling efforts and is now proud to say they reuse and recycle 100 percent of their waste. (KCNC)

  • Two women were found dead inside a home on Oasis Avenue on Monday afternoon and a man who fled the scene and led deputies on a chase shot himself in his car, El Paso County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Joe Roybal said. (AP)

  • Gasoline prices in Denver continued to fall last week with the average cost of a gallon of gasoline Sunday at $3.67, according to GasBuddy.com. The price of a gallon in Denver fell 4.2 cents last week, compared to the national average. (GC)

  • Denver's Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. has restarted most of the 500 oil and gas wells it shut down last week due to the Wild Rose-Texas Mountain fire in northwestern Colorado. (DBJ)

  • A colossal wildfire near a popular summer retreat in southern Colorado continues to be driven by winds and fueled by dead trees in a drought-stricken area, authorities said Sunday. (KCNC)
  • While western Colorado continued to sweat out dangerous fire conditions Sunday night, areas east of the Continental Divide were being rocked by thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service. Fire danger remains high across the state for Monday (GC)
  • Lakewood police said a woman in her 50s was in a vehicle traveling south on C-470 near Alameda Parkway with her husband when she jumped from the vehicle at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday night. Police said the woman's motive from jumping from the vehicle was unclear. The woman was taken to the hospital. Her husband returned to the scene and was taken into custody on the suspicion of DUI. The couple's car was towed. (Denver Post)
  • Authorities say a 32-year-old Denver man died after he was swept away by the North Platte River in southern Wyoming's Carbon County. The sheriff's office says Derick Scovill was camping with his parents and other family members in the Miracle Mile area when he fell into the river Monday. His body washed ashore two miles downstream about an hour and a half after he fell in.(AP)
  • The Colorado Civil Rights Division has ruled in favor of Coy Mathis, a transgender 6-year-old boy who was was barred from using the girls' bathroom at Eagleside Elementary School in Fountain. (Denver Post)
  • #Boulder and Xcel Energy Colorado are battling over the ability to serve electricity to 5,800 households and businesses in unincorporated Boulder County. (Daily Camera)
  • The Finest Duct Cleaning Inc. has been getting complaints from customers, and on Friday was ordered to stop doing business. All over the metro area residents tried to have their air ducts cleaned, but they allegedly ended up paying hundreds of dollars more than they thought, and now the company is being sued by the state.   • Hundreds of crimes in Denver were not included in FBI statistics last year largely because of officer error and software glitches, Denver Police Department officials acknowledged. (GC)
  • A group of suspects accused of breaking into more than 20 cars in Castle Rock has turned up again. Castle Rock police are trying to nab the group of suspects who broke into the cars after they tried to use stolen credit cards. Police are looking for three to five suspects. Along with the cards the men got away with, guns and electronics.(GC)
  • Betsy Markey, who represented Colorado's 4th Congressional District from 2009-2011, is expected to announce Monday that she will run for state treasurer. (Denver Post)
  • Colorado Springs Police say two people were killed in a car crash Sunday night. The call reportedly came in as two cars drag racing. (KKTV)
  • A Denver teenager died in car wreck near Silt on Interstate 70 at approximately 6:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release by the Colorado State Patrol. Makenzie Leikam died when the Honda CR-V she was traveling in rolled multiple times. The teen was reportedly on her way back to Denver from Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Another person in the vehicle survived the crash. (DenverPost)
  • CraftWorks Restaurants & Breweries Inc., which has headquarters in Broomfield and Chattanooga, Tenn., has plunked down roughly $10 million so far into a "refresh" of its Old Chicago restaurant concept, which got its start in Boulder in 1976. (Daily Camera)

  • Homeowners who want to do wildfire mitigation now have access to millions of dollars in matching funds from the state. Lawmakers re-authorized a 2008 bill that provides tax credits for 50 percent of a homeowners mitigation costs up to $2,500. But that only helps so much if neighbors don’t mitigate as well. So they passed another law aimed at helping entire communities do mitigation. It provides nearly $10 million in matching grants for not only local governments, but homeowners associations. (KCNC)
  • Police say more children may have been sexually assaulted by a babysitter in Arapahoe County. Justin Jefferson, 22, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting several children while babysitting them. Families hired him off of a website and police believe there could be more victims. Jefferson is now behind bars for sexually assaulting two young boys. He was hired through the website Care.com, a trusted site dedicated to making it easier to find care for a family. (KCNC)
  • The tiny red and white helicopter sitting on the helipad might look like any other, but since it arrived a year ago, the aircraft and its crew have reduced by half the amount of time it takes to transport a patient to Medical Center of the Rockies (Coloradoan)
  • The Royal Gorge Route Railroad is back in business for the first time since the wildfire there earlier this month. The railroad was able to make its full 22-mile round trip on Friday. The cables from the tramway that was destroyed by the fire have finally been cleared.(AP)
  • Wildfire season is so bad this year that some county leaders aren’t even warning anyone about firework restrictions — they’re just handing out tickets. And open fire bans are being put in place across the state. Boulder police say those caught with illegal fireworks could possibly be arrested.(Daily Camera)
