  • The East Peak Fire in Huerfano County has grown to more than 1,000 acres and has led to an order for a pre-evacuation notice for the Southern Colorado city of Walsenburg. (AP)

  • A Longmont man critically injured after a May 22 shootout with a Longmont police officer is being held in a secure hospital unit for jail inmates and state prisoners, but he has not been arrested or charged in the shooting, according to police.   • A tornado briefly touched down Tuesday over the east runways of Denver International Airport, where thousands of people took shelter in bathrooms, stairwells and other safe spots until the dangerous weather passed.
  • The El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa says fire investigators have narrowed the area where they suspect the Black Forest Fire started to a 40-by 40-foot piece of land. 


  • El Paso County officials have released the name of the man and woman who died last week in the Black Forest Fire.  Marc Allen Herklotz, 52, and Robin Lauran Herklotz, 50, were killed. They were found in their car in a garage.


  • Veteran pitcher Roy Oswalt will start for the Rockies on Thursday in Washington, manager Walt Weiss said, as Colorado looks to provide a boost to its rotation and ease the burden on the bullpen. 


  • Hail, not wildfires, driving insurance increases.  The perception of some is that catastrophic losses caused by wildfires in the last two years are bringing up the rates of home insurance. The reality is very different and proven by insurance statistics.


  • Firefighters on Tuesday afternoon extinguished a small fire inside a machine at the Ranch-Way Feeds mill in east Old Town Fort Collins. 


  • Denver Police and Denver Fire investigate a scene where a train struck a vehicle on a rail crossing at the intersection of Bayaud Avenue and Kalamath Street on Tuesday night.  The two people in the car died.


  • An autopsy will be done Wednesday morning on a teenager who was found floating face down in a pond in Fort Collins. 


  • A recall petition against a Colorado lawmaker who supported gun rights was deemed sufficient Tuesday, setting up the first potential recall of a state lawmaker in Colorado history. 


  • An Arapahoe County man is under arrest, accused of embezzling nearly $1-million worth of cash, gold and silver coins from the Foster Charitable Foundation. 


  • Ikea on Tuesday said it will add more solar power panels to the roof of its two-year-old Centennial store, nearly doubling the store’s ability to generate electricity from solar power and creating Colorado’s largest rooftop solar power plant. 


  • Boulder County's 16-month-old moratorium on accepting and processing new applications for oil and gas development in unincorporated areas of the county will be extended for another 18 months.


  • A $500,000 bond has been set for Ronald Turner Sr., the man suspected of helping his son kidnap his grandson in Longmont and travel to Canada. 


  • The Hallmark Channel will film a primetime series in Colorado, Gov John Hickenlooper and the head of the channel announced Tuesday. 


  • A United Airlines flight of the 787 Dreamliner from Denver to Tokyo was diverted to Seattle Tuesday."United flight 139 from Denver to Tokyo-Narita diverted to Seattle due to an indication of a problem with an oil filter. 


  • Police in Aurora are warning about a man who posed as a meter reader and tied up and robbed a woman.  The man was carrying a clipboard when he knocked on the victim's front door.  Police say he told the woman that she needed to sign some paperwork then forced his way inside, where he used zip-ties on her wrists, hit her in the face and robbed her.


  • Esmil Rogers took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the Blue Jays extended their winning streak to seven games with an 8-3 victory over the Rockies on Tuesday night

  • A Longmont couple has been arrested and accused of pimping, pandering and 'keeping a house of prostitution' in connection with massage parlor raids in Fort Collins earlier this year. 
  • Federal and local Denver metro area law enforcement agencies busted 22 alleged prostitutes last week, all of whom advertised on two separate Internet sites, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
  • Multiple missteps by Lakewood police the morning officer James Davies was shot by a fellow officer contributed to Davies' death, a review board looking into the incident has found. 
  • A former Loveland police officer has pleaded guilty to child pornography charges.Rodney Bretches, 48, pleaded guilty to felony attempt to commit sexual exploitation of a child and misdemeanor unlawful sexual contact during a Monday hearing in Larimer County District Court.

  • A Colorado task force on Monday got down to developing unprecedented limits for building homes in burn zones after the Black Forest fire raised concerns — again — that risks and costs are becoming too great. 
  • A husband and wife were stabbed and pepper sprayed at a light rail station, and police are scouring surveillance video from the area. Police say originally a man walked up asking for a cigarette. The assault ended after the husband was pepper sprayed and the woman was stabbed in the back and head. 
  • Tivoli Brewing, a new company that brought back one of the oldest names in Denver beer last year, will begin selling 22-ounce bomber bottles of Tivoli Beer this week. 
  • Police say one man has died after an accident while trying to remove tree stumps in Aurora, and another is injured.  Police say a man was using a tow strap connected to a vehicle to pull stumps from the front of a house Monday when the strap disconnected from the stump. The tow strap’s hook shot through the vehicle’s rear window and struck the driver in the back of the head. The vehicle then traveled across the street onto a front porch, striking an elderly man who was sitting there.
  • Recycling is big in Fort Collins, with nearly 50 percent of the waste generated by city residents and businesses diverted from landfills. 
  • Fans at the Denver Broncos games this season will not be allowed to bring in standard-size purses, diaper bags, backpacks, camera bags or coolers. 
  • Boulder could move one step closer Tuesday night to hosting a full Ironman triathlon if the City Council gives its approval 
  • Maicer Izturis hit a two-run single in the eighth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays won their sixth consecutive game Monday night, beating the Colorado Rockies 2-0 behind Josh Johnson and two relievers.  The Rockies face the Blue Jays again tonight.

  • The judge in the Colorado theater shootings says as many as 3,500 prospective jurors will be summoned when the case goes to trial. 


  • A total of 33 cars were damaged Sunday morning in Commerce City by what police suspect were shots fired from a BB gun. 


  • Police say they intend to find and prosecute anyone guilty of a crime in the Black Forest Fire evacuation areas.  Police are on the lookout for looters, burn vandals and people committing other crimes in the area.  El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa says they have reports of several crimes.


  • Firefighters in Colorado had the Black Forest fire 65 percent contained Sunday, and authorities said all residents of the area were accounted for. Authorities said the wildfire, which started Tuesday, had taken two lives while consuming 485 homes and blackening 14,198 acres, The Denver Post reported. About 1,175 personnel were working to control the blaze. The couple that died in the fire are expected to be identified Monday.


  • The Daily Camera reported the University of Colorado Boulder’s athletic department may be facing some financial problems.  Athletic department finance officials told the Daily Camera they’re expecting a $7.5 million shortfall. It comes as the university is searching for a new athletic director.


  • Employees at MaxFund Animal Adoption Center said a couple asked to take a dog for a walk, leaving their photo identification and bike, but never returned. Around 1 p.m. Sunday, a man and woman came into the shelter at 1025 Galapago Street. Employee Erica Jenkins said they spent 30 minutes going through a book of adoptable dogs and finally asked to see a female American Bulldog by the name of Louie.


  • Montrose was named an All-America City Sunday night by the National Civic League at the group's awards ceremony in Denver. 


  • A group that advocates for working women is jumping into the controversy over the Regional Transportation District's move to dump or revamp bus routes in the western suburbs. 


  • Members of the nonprofit Friends of Denver Parks complained about a lack of transparency and openness in the transfer of Hampden Heights North Park land by the city of Denver to Denver Public Schools for a new elementary school. 


  • Colorado's hot real estate market has put some buyers in the prickly position of having to decide just how much they're willing to pay for a property — even if it means paying more than it's currently worth. 


  • Jhoulys Chacin came within an out of his second career shutout and the Colorado Rockies beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 Sunday.   The Rockies are in Toronto to take on the Blue Jays tonight.


  • In preparation for a possible wildfire evacuation, the WOLF sanctuary has been given county permission to construct 15 kennels off-site, and the sanctuary is asking for material donations to help with construction.

  • Authorities have issued a warning about the high water levels in Clear Creek. High water can quickly turn to flash flooding, according to authorities. This week’s warm temperatures caused snow to melt quickly, forcing water levels to surge
  • Black Forest fire 55% contained; some evacuees allowed to return home.  483 homes lost and another 17 damaged.
  • A stolen car had to be pulled out of Clear Creek Saturday morning. Dive teams found the vehicle submerged in the rapids. 
  • A fire broke out at Union Station in downtown Denver on Saturday. The fire happened in a construction area — specifically a stairway on the side of the historic building.  Union Station is getting a complete makeover that will expand its facilities to include bus service and light rail.  Denver firefighters were able to quickly knock down the blaze. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
  • A woman in Boulder was driving drunk and crashed her car on the way to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting last October. Now, after causing some serious damage and injuries, she’ll be spending some time behind bars. Brenda Geers, 73, pleaded guilty to vehicular assault and DUI and was sentenced to 60 days in jail and five days probation.
  • A fire has destroyed half of a duplex in the 1100 block of North Clinton Street.  One person was injured and taken to the hospital. Four adults and three children living there have been displaced.
  • A Westminster bicyclist has died a week after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver, police said Saturday 
  • Tyler Chatwood pitched five effective innings in his return from a triceps injury, Tyler Colvin homered during Colorado’s six-run first, and the Rockies snapped a three-game losing streak with a 10-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. 
  • Scott's Liquid Gold shareholders voted Friday at their annual meeting on a proposal by Scott's biggest outside investor to explore putting the 62-year-old Denver company up for sale. 
  • U.S. 36 Overhaul:  $425 million highway widening effort moves into what construction managers are calling "the meat" of the endeavor.  Miles more of roadway will be squeezed into constricted lanes, three major bridges will be pulverized and brought to the ground and the new concrete road surface will get its first pour starting late next month. The number of workers in the corridor will swell, from the 250 or so today to more than 400.
  • Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park to be closed for two weeks
  • An undercover sting operation led to conviction of a Loveland doctor for writing an illegitimate medical-marijuana license, and a second doctor is set for trial on the same charge in July.
